Events

The Grand Winter Sports Carnival is a six week celebration encompassing all aspects of historical and modern skiing and winter sports.  There are over 100 winter carnival events planned.  See the complete list below and come experience the roots of our skiing heritage.  All carnival events are subject to change at any time without notice.

Today marks the closing day of our 6-week, 100 events, 100th anniversary celebration of the first winter carnival west of the Mississippi River that was held right here in Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado where our Grand Winter Sports Carnival is based.  If you made it to our opening ceremonies, this closing day event will be as much fun, if not more. For a printable schedule of Closing Day Activities, please click here.

Cottonwood Pass Mailbag Trek - 9am - 12noon (whenever trekkers finish). Coulter House to Hot Sulphur Springs over Cottonwood Pass. Pioneer Village Museum - 10am - 4pm.  Free admission to the museum including the special winter carnival exhibit.  110 E. Byers Avenue, Hot Sulphur Springs

Historic Sites Tour - 11am.  Pioneer Village Museum, 110 E. Byers Avenue, Hot Sulphur Springs.  There will be a talk at the museum by a local historian who will provide a map of actual locations of the original winter carnival events as well as other historic sites.

Hot Sulphur Springs - Parshall Fire Protection District Community Light Lunch - 11:30am - 1:30pm.  $ donation appreciated.  Hot Sulphur Springs Fire Station, 286 Grand Avenue, Hot Sulphur Springs.  The mailbag trekkers will be finishing near  there and will be coming by for lunch before the parade and everyone is welcome.

Button (as in Horace) Parade - 1pm staging is at the Hot Sulphur Springs Fire Station, 286 Grand Ave. and the parade begins at 1:30pm and proceeds down Grand Avenue to Aspen Street then back around to the Town Park at Cedar and Maple Streets.  A celebration of Ski Hall of Fame inductee Horace Button.  Parade entrants need simply show up.  No registration required.  Contact Don Dailey at 970-five-zero-nine-0568 for more information.  For a parade flier, please click here.

Grand County Town Challenge Snowshoe Softball Tournament - After the parade about 2pm.  Town Park, Hot Sulphur Springs at the intersection of Cedar and Maple Streets, two blocks north of Grand Avenue.

3-Legged Ski Race (yes, on skis!) - After the parade about 2pm.  Town Park, Hot Sulphur Springs at the intersection of Cedar and Maple Streets, two blocks north of Grand Avenue.

Skijoring demonstration - 2pm.  Town Park, Hot Sulphur Springs at the intersection of Cedar and Maple Streets, two blocks north of Grand Avenue.  Sponsored by the Winter Park Horseman's Association.

Grand Winter Sports Carnival Postmark - Monday - Friday, 9am - 4pm, Saturday 9am - noon, except holidays. Come to the Hot Sulphur Springs Post Office at 506 Grand Ave. across from the Riverside Hotel during regular business hours to get this special commemorative postal cancellation on your letters and postcards.  Ask for the carnival cancellation postmark at the post office counter.

Parking

Parking will be available in Hot Sulphur Springs at the following locations:

* Pioneer Village Museum, 110 E. Byers Ave. at US 40, behind the Ute Trail Motel, 2 lots available
* Grand County Administrative Building at US40 between Maple and Spring Street - The county administrative building is open on Friday and will have five parking spaces clearly marked for use by county business only.  Thank you for respecting those spaces.
* Grand County Judicial Center on Moffatt Ave. behind the County Administrative Building
* Pioneer Park - From Grand Ave. cross the Colorado River at the Riverside Hotel and take your first left at the park sign.  This is the location of the carnival ice skating rink.
* Parking is also available on all Hot Sulphur Springs Streets.  Please be respectful of all public and private properties by, among other things, not blocking peoples driveways.  Also, please do not park in business parking lots unless you are patronizing that business during the carnival.

Aspen Street will be closed during the carnival opening weekend activities where Carnival Central and the Hot Sulphur Town Hall is located between Byers Ave. (US 40) and Grand Ave.  Thank you for respecting all public and private properties and please be careful while crossing and walking along all public roads and bridges.

Meet & Greet Winter Ski Trekkers - 9 - 11 a.m. Free Family Fun & Breakfast.  Cozens Ranch, 77849 US Hwy 40 (across from the recreation center), Fraser, CO.  Kick off the 100th Anniversary of Grand County’s Winter Carnival in the Fraser/Winter Park area.  Greet the inspiring athletes who re-enact the historic ski trek from Corona Pass to Hot Sulphur Springs as they pass by Cozens Ranch, just like the ol’ days!  Bring the kids, your X-Country skis, snowshoes, and cameras.  Free continental breakfast sponsored by Pinnacle Lodge, Fraser and Ziggy’s Donuts, Winter Park.  For more information, please call 970-726-5488.

Food and Fun Fest - 11am - end of fireworks. Enjoy food and shopping with a winter and sports theme. Carnival Central across from Hot Sulphur Springs Town Hall, 513 Aspen Street.  Food will be provided by Maverick's Grille from Granby and there will be a beer garden with brews by Grand Lake Brewing.

Ribbon Cutting and Opening of Ice Skating Rink - 11am.  Hot Sulphur Springs, Pioneer Park between the Colorado River and the railroad tracks.  Cross the river at the old Riverside Hotel and take your first left at the Pioneer Park sign.  The skating rink is open from 11am - dusk.  Sponsored by Waste Management.

Ice Sculpture Display Opening & Demonstration - 11:30am opening with 'dueling chainsaws' ice sculpture demonstration at 12noon. Carnival Central across from Hot Sulphur Springs Town Hall, 513 Aspen Street.  Sponsored by Sons of Norway, Grand County.

Stick Horse Races for the Kids - Hourly, Noon - 6pm. Carnival Central across from the Hot Sulphur Springs Town Hall at 513 Aspen Street.

Corona to Hot Sulphur Springs Re-enactment Ski Trek - Between 3:30 - 4pm arrival at Carnival Central across from the Town Hall at 513 Aspen Street in Hot Sulphur Springs.  The Grand Nordic Club and the Headwaters Trails Alliance are re-creating the original feat by Norwegians Carl Howelson and Angell Schmidt (44 miles in 9 hours!). The re-enactment trekkers will leave from the top of the Continental Divide early in the morning and skiers can join the trekkers along the route and from Snow Mountain Ranch to Hot Sulphur Springs. Arrival of the skiers into Hot Sulphur Springs will kick off the official opening ceremonies and the lighting of the bonfire.  Re-enactment starts at 8am, Snow Mountain Ranch segment begins at 1pm. Hot Sulphur Springs Community Church - Open House, 1 - 3pm.  604 Maple Street at US 40 next to the Grand County Administrative Building, Hot Sulphur Springs, CO.  Free hot chocolate and apple cider.  Come in and get warm and learn about the history of the church over the past 100 years.  Church bell ringing will occur as re-enactment skiers arrive in town between 3:30 and 4pm.  This church appears in the Grand Winter Sports Carnival commemorative postcard #6 of 6, available at the Pioneer Village Museum in Hot Sulphur Springs and at other merchandise outlets.

Opening Ceremonies/Bonfire - 4pm. Grand County Mortuary - 1 - 4pm.  Come in for free hot chocolate and hot cider and warm up by the fire.  204 Byers Ave (US 40), Hot Sulphur Springs, CO.   Two blocks east towards Granby from Carnival Central.

Snowshoe Shuffle Along the Colorado River - 3 - 4pm.  Pioneer Park, Hot Sulphur Springs.  Cross the river at the old Riverside Hotel and take your first right after crossing the bridge.  Meet up at the gate, strap on your snowshoes and meander with us along the Colorado River.

Rail Jam Exhibition - 4 - 7pm. Hot Sulphur Springs.  Tricks have come a long way since Carl and Angell flew through the air on their wooden skis in 1911.  Come watch this amazing demonstration by the Winter Park Competition Team.  Aspen Street in front of Hot Sulphur Springs Town Hall.  Participation in the rail jam is by invitation only.  Sponsored by Winter Park Resort.

Barney's Landing Dedication at Winter Park Resort - 11:00am, top of Olympia Express Chairlift, Winter Park Resort.  Barney McLean was the first skier with a strong association to Winter Park to represent the United States in the Winter Olympics, in 1948.  Barney’s Landing is a nod to Barney's origin as a ski jumper in Hot Sulphur Springs and his service as an Army Air Corps pilot during World War II.

Barney's Landing at Winter Park Ski Resort 2011-12 Season dedication of the top of the Olympia Chairlift will be named "Barney's Landing" in honor of Barney McLean. The timing of the dedication during the 2011-12 ski season, will coincide with the Grand Winter Sports Carnival, celebrating a century of Colorado’s ski industry. Barney McLean was the first skier with a strong association to Winter Park to represent the United States in the Winter Olympics, in 1948.  Barney’s Landing is a nod to Barney's origin as a ski jumper in Hot Sulphur Springs and his service as an Army Air Corps pilot during World War II.
